03/13 Welcome to the Orange County Employees Retirement System The Orange County Employees Retirement System (OCERS) provides retirement benefi ts for em- ployees of the County and certain districts. While you are a member, you and your employer make mandatory contributions to the Retirement System. When you retire, you may receive a monthly allowance that is based on your Plan Type, age at retirement, average monthly earnings, and years of service. A survivor or death benefi t may be available to your spouse or other designated benefi ciary. In addition, disability benefi ts are available if you meet the eligibility requirements. As you read your new SPD, we encourage you to refer to the Key Terms section to help you better understand this important document. This Summary Plan Description (SPD) applies to General Members in Plans I & J (2.7% at 55). This document refl ects the System provisions in effect as of January 1, 2013. Membership in the Retirement System is mandatory for all eligible employees. It is, however, op- tional for certain elected offi cials. WHO IS OCERS? For more than 60 years OCERS has been providing retirement, death and disability benefi ts to employees of the County and certain districts. OCERS currently serves approximately 26,000 active and deferred members and 14,000 retired members. OCERS is governed by a Board of Retirement consisting of nine regular members and one alternate member (the County Treasurer, four active elected members, four appointed members and one elected retiree). OUR MISSION STATEMENT The Orange County Employees Retirement System pledges to provide secure retirement and disability benefi ts, quality information concerning those benefi ts, and prompt, professional and courteous service that meets the highest standards of excellence. In carrying out that role, the Board of Retirement and staff are committed to act for the exclusive benefi t of the plan and its participants, manage assets of the plan prudently, and administer benefi ts with impartiality.
