Providence ABSTRACT: Criteria for the specific diagnoses of theseveral arthritides, on the basis of exfoliative cytologyexamination of fluids aspirated from diseased joints,were derived from examinations of 126 specimens ofsynovial fluid. They were screened cytologically and wholly on the basis of the cytological findings wereclassified into seven groups: rheumatoid arthritis, os-teoarthritis, traumatic arthritis, gouty arthritis,Reiter’s syndrome, pigmented villonodular synovitis,and septic arthritis. The cytological features of each group appeared relatively constant and reproducible.Subsequent comparison of the clinical and cytologicaldiagnoses showed excellent correlation.A swollen joint often becomes a diagnostic puzzleand specific laboratory tests are frequently lacking. While the tests for rheumatoid factor in serum, if positive, arehelpful in establishing the diagnosis of rheumatoid ar-thritis, they are often negative in early cases when diag-nosis is most desirable. Similar problems occur withserum uric-acid determinations in gout....
